History - Fork Baptist Church

14357 Jefferson Highway, Bumpass, VA, 23024 | Sundays @ 10:30am

In an old English courthouse, Methodists, Presbyerians and Baptists were meeting on alternating Sundays. The courthouse itself had been build before the American Revolution and used by both the British and Virginia Colonists for court. The Methodists and Presbyerians declined to assist in the upkeep so the Baptists, by mutual agreement, took sole ownership of the building. in 1824, the Baptist Church was constituted as Fork Meeting House with Timothy T Swift serving as the first pastor.

The Civil War took its toll on the church as many men were absent due to the fighting. Fork Meeting House became a place of muster where the Louisa Gray’s were mustered into service. On April 8, 1825, they became the Company F of the 56th infantry division of Virginia and were in many important engagements of the war. They eventually formed a portion of the Pickett’s Division charging at Gettysburg.

Fork united on a field with South Anna, Oakland, and Little River, sharing pastors from 1889-1961. The present building was constructed in 1914. The name was changed to Fork Baptist Church, October 1943. Sunday School rooms, bathrooms and a kitchen were added. The addition was dedicated to Sue Duke Meredith and Jerry Harris, September 29, 1963. The parsonage was completed in 1968. The Meredith Fellowship Hall and Sunday School wing was dedicated September 19, 1993.
